UK Set for One of the Longest-Lasting Heatwaves Since 1976

Heatwave
As temperatures continue to rise across the UK, many people are beginning to feel the effects of the extreme heat. While sunny weather can be enjoyable, prolonged periods of high temperatures can also pose serious health risks.

Health and social care services are expected to experience significant pressure during periods of extreme heat, with a possible increase in heat-related illnesses and deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or those living with existing medical conditions.

The impact of the heat has already been felt across the country, with some schools closing and parts of the transport network experiencing disruption as people adapted to the challenging conditions.

Although current forecasts do not predict record-breaking temperatures like those experienced in May and June, experts have warned that this summer could bring further periods of intense heat.

With summer continuing until the end of August, forecasters suggest an increased possibility of heatwaves and heat-related impacts. Above-average temperatures are expected throughout July and August across the UK and Europe.

This could potentially make this one of the longest-lasting heatwaves since the well-known summer of 1976.

During a heatwave, small actions can make a big difference in protecting your health and wellbeing. Here are some practical steps you can take:

  • Drink plenty of water and include foods with a high-water content, such as fruits and vegetables, in your diet.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics and use a hat to protect yourself from direct sunlight.
  • Stay in the shade whenever possible and avoid unnecessary travel, strenuous exercise, or spending long periods outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Use fans, ice packs, and take cool showers to help lower your body temperature and stay comfortable.

Taking care of your physical health is essential, which is why we invite you to attend our Health Day meetings every Tuesday at your nearest Universal Church. Come and learn how faith can be used as a powerful tool to complement any medical treatment you may already be receiving.
