The One Thing Every Relationship Needs More Of

Time

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, yet how we choose to spend those hours can make all the difference in our relationships. That was the key message shared at last Thursday’s Love Therapy seminar.

Time is one of the most valuable investments we can make in our love life. As it is something we can never get back once it has passed, we should ask ourselves: are we using our time wisely?

Every day presents opportunities to focus on what matters most, and one of God’s principles is to dedicate time both to our relationship with Him and to the people we love.

Marriage, in particular, requires continual care. Getting to know your husband or wife is not something that ends after the honeymoon or the first few years together. People change over the years. They face different challenges, develop new interests and experience different seasons of life. When couples stop making time to communicate, they stop growing together.

It doesn’t happen overnight. More often, the distance develops gradually until conversations become shorter, routines replace meaningful moments and two people who once felt close begin to feel like strangers sharing the same home.

Many couples say they struggle to find time for one another. But is it really a lack of time, or is it how that time is being used?

Although our responsibilities may differ, we all make decisions about where our attention goes. It’s possible to spend hours answering emails, scrolling through social media or watching television, while giving only a few distracted minutes to the person we love.

One of the biggest distractions today is the mobile phone. Research has shown that excessive phone use can negatively affect relationships, with many couples sitting side by side while remaining emotionally disconnected.

After our relationship with God, our commitment to our husband or wife should be one of our greatest priorities.

Strengthening a relationship does not require expensive gifts or elaborate date nights. Often, it is the simple daily habits that have the greatest impact.

This can be seen through everyday actions, such as sharing a meal without distractions, asking how the other person’s day really went, listening instead of rushing the conversation, praying together and paying attention to one another’s needs all help to strengthen the bond between a couple.  These simple habits may seem insignificant on their own, but together they build trust, closeness and unity.

For those who are single, rather than seeing this stage of life as a period of waiting, it should be viewed as a season of preparation. Use this time to deepen your relationship with God, strengthen your character and develop the qualities needed for a healthy relationship.

Every lesson learned, every prayer and every positive change is an investment that will benefit your future.

God is never early and never late. As the Lord of time, He knows exactly when each season should begin. Instead of getting frustrated by waiting, your focus is to make good use of the season you’re in today.
