A study published in the medical journal Gut has revealed a concerning link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods, which are high in fats, and the rising cases of colorectal cancer in individuals under 50.
Researchers from the University of South Florida analysed tumour samples from 162 patients and found a significant presence of molecules derived from omega-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids are commonly found in seed oils such as canola, corn, and sunflower, which are frequently used in the production of ultra-processed foods.
The scientists warn that these molecules can cause inflammation in the body and disrupt natural defence processes. This leads to chronic inflammation, which may contribute to the development of serious diseases, including colorectal cancer. To address this issue, researchers advocate for a more balanced nutritional approach centred on resolving inflammation through healthy eating habits.
Beyond the physical impact, this study prompts us to consider how poor dietary choices can also affect our spiritual lives. The Word of God emphasises the importance of caring for our bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit: “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Taking care of your body through a balanced diet and avoiding excesses is not only about physical well-being but also about strengthening your mind and spirit. After all, both body and soul coexist, and nourishing them in a healthy way can lead to a fulfilling and harmonious life.
