Could prayer have a positive impact on both physical and emotional wellbeing?
According to a study carried out in the United States, Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine investigated whether prayer could help people experiencing pain and anxiety. Their findings, published in the Annals of Family Medicine, suggest that prayer may be an effective complementary approach alongside conventional treatment.
The study involved 180 patients attending a family medicine clinic, all of whom reported clinically significant pain, rating their discomfort at four or higher on a scale of zero to ten.
Participants were divided into two groups. One group received intercessory prayer, while the other participated in a music-based intervention. The researchers then monitored both groups over several weeks.
The findings showed that those who received prayer experienced a significantly greater reduction in pain immediately after the session. The improvement remains evident when participants were assessed two weeks later
Researchers also observed a notable decrease in anxiety among those who received prayer. This reduction was seen immediately after the session and continued in follow-up assessments conducted two and six weeks later.
Lead researcher Katherine Jacobson, Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said: “Proximal intercessory prayer has proven safe, effective, and well-received as a complementary treatment for pain and anxiety.”
While scientific research continues exploring its effects, the Bible encouraged people to turn to God in times of need.
Jesus said: “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Luke 11:9–10)
These words are a reminder that God is attentive to those who sincerely turn to Him. Prayer is not simply about asking for help; it is about building a relationship with God. It is a moment to speak honestly with Him, placing your worries, fears and hopes into His hands.
The Lord Jesus also taught that we approach God through Him: “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13)
Whether you are facing physical pain, anxiety or any other challenges, prayer is something everyone can practise. It costs nothing to make it part of your daily routine alongside the medical treatment you may be receiving. It can be done anywhere, and offers an opportunity to place your concerns before God each day.
