For many years, faith and mental health were often seen as two completely separate subjects. In fact, the idea that spirituality could have a positive impact on a person’s mental well-being was sometimes met with scepticism within the scientific community.
However, this view is gradually changing, as researchers and healthcare professionals increasingly recognise that a person’s beliefs can play an important role in their overall well-being. As a result, rather than questioning whether faith has any influence on mental health, experts are now exploring how spirituality can help people navigate life’s challenges and support their emotional health.
This shift in thinking was recently highlighted at the 6th Global Forum on Spirituality, Religion and Mental Health, hosted by Harvard Medical School.
Organised by the World Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association, the event brought together around 180 specialists from 20 countries. Psychiatrists, psychologists, theologians, chaplains, and other professionals gathered to share research and discuss the growing connection between spirituality and mental health.
While spirituality is not a replacement for professional medical treatment, many people find that their faith gives them strength and reassurance during difficult times.
Health challenges rarely affect just one person. They can also have a significant impact on family members, friends and loved ones, creating emotional strain and worry for everyone involved. During these moments, having spiritual support can make a positive difference.
That is why, at the Universal Church, we hold Health Day services every Tuesday across the UK. These meetings are dedicated to those who are seeking strength, prayers, encouragement and spiritual support while dealing with health concerns or caring for someone who is.
Here, you will find a welcoming environment, helping you to strengthen your faith and face your challenges with renewed hope.
