Fight or Flight?

Fight or flight
Life often places us in situations where we must make a quick decision. But in that moment, do we face the problem or run away from it? Do we stand our ground or avoid the situation altogether?

Most people have experienced moments like this. Imagine walking down the street and suddenly notice a loose dog approaching. In a matter of seconds, you need to decide what to do: ignore it, stand and face it, or run to safety?

This reaction is commonly known as the “fight or flight” instinct. It’s a natural response designed to protect us. However, for those who live by faith, there is something greater than instinct guiding their decisions.

Faith teaches us that every situation should be approached with wisdom, discernment and trust in God.

Many people assume that retreating means giving up. In reality, stepping back can be one of the wisest decisions a person makes. Think about everyday situations: a stranger says something offensive, and an argument begins to escalate. The immediate reaction may be to defend yourself or fight back. But what is gained by turning every disagreement into a battle?

A mature person understands that not every challenge deserves a response. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is walk away. Not because you’re afraid, but because you recognise the consequences of acting on impulse.

The Bible shows us that there are times when stepping back is the right course of action. In Jeremiah 6:1, people were instructed to flee from danger in order to preserve their lives. Their retreat was not an act of cowardice but a demonstration of wisdom and obedience.

This principle also applies to our spiritual lives. Anyone who wants to remain strong in their faith must be careful about the influences they allow into their life. There are environments, relationships and habits that can gradually weaken our relationship with God. Sometimes the best decision is to create distance between yourself and whatever threatens your spiritual wellbeing.

However, not every problem can be avoided. There are challenges that demand to be faced.

Perhaps you’ve noticed problems appearing in areas of your life that once seemed stable. Difficulties in your finances, overall well-being, family or personal peace may have emerged without reason. At times, these problems seem to grow quietly, yet their impact can be significant.

What should you do when faced with situations like these?

While there are moments when retreating is wise, constantly avoiding problems creates even greater difficulties. Putting off important decisions, avoiding difficult conversations, ignoring mistakes or refusing to take responsibility rarely makes a situation better. More often than not, it allows the problem to grow.

Many people try to escape reality through endless scrolling on social media, excessive entertainment or unhealthy habits. These distractions may offer temporary relief, but they do not bring lasting solutions. Sooner or later, the issue still needs to be confronted.

This is why knowing when to fight or flight is important and faith gives us that understanding. There are moments when God guides us to step away from danger, temptation or unnecessary conflict. And there are also moments when He calls us to stand firm, trust Him and face our challenges with courage.

The Point of Light Chain of Prayer takes place in every Universal Church across the UK and aims to help people identify and overcome the spiritual roots behind the problems they face.

Through Bible-based teachings, powerful prayers and the laying on of hands, attendees are encouraged to use their faith intelligently and take a stand against the negative situations affecting their lives. This Friday, 5th June, you are invited to attend at your local Universal Church.

The question is: when faced with the problems that have been holding you back, will you choose fight or flight?

Event: Point of Light
