A new chapter has begun for the Universal Church with the official opening of its first church in Denmark. The inauguration took place on 3 May in Copenhagen, bringing together local Danish residents and people of various nationalities who have been part of the Church’s growing work in the country.
The opening was even more special as it marked the fulfilment of a journey that began more than five years ago. The Universal Church first started in Denmark on 7 March 2020 and initially, meetings were held only once a month.
However, shortly afterwards, the COVID-19 pandemic brought much of the world to a standstill. Like many organisations, the Church had to adapt quickly, moving its meetings online during periods of restriction.
Despite these challenges, the work continued and gradually expanded. What began as a small monthly gathering has since developed into a growing community of faith. Today, the Church’s team consists of a couple of pastors, an assistant, and two individuals currently preparing for ministry through the Preparatory Course for Assistants.
Services are held in English, making them accessible to both local residents and people from different backgrounds who live and work in the country. When needed, translations are also provided in Portuguese and Danish, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the services.
This inclusive approach is especially important in a country such as Denmark. While Denmark is frequently recognised as one of the happiest countries in the world, many people continue to face personal struggles that affect their emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
According to Pastor Francisco Batista, who oversees the work of the Universal Church in Denmark, many of those seeking help come with challenges such as deep sadness and loneliness. For this reason, the Church has focused on providing practical spiritual support through its weekly meetings.
“Our mission is to help people find hope through faith and develop a genuine relationship with God,” Pastor Francisco explained.
That mission extends far beyond the walls of the church building in Copenhagen. Pastor Francisco regularly travels to other parts of Denmark to visit families and individuals who are unable to attend services in person. These visits provide encouragement, guidance, and opportunities for people to strengthen their faith, regardless of where they live. This commitment ensures that spiritual support is available to those who may otherwise feel isolated or disconnected.
The impact of this work can be seen in the dedication of those who attend the Church’s meetings. Some families travel up to five hours to take part in the services, demonstrating their desire to grow spiritually and learn more about God. It reflects the hunger many people have for genuine faith and spiritual direction.
For this reason, the opening of the church building represents far more than the launch of a new location. It is an opportunity for even more people to access support, strengthen their faith, and experience a personal encounter with God.
