Many people unknowingly carry emotional wounds into their love life. A painful breakup, betrayal, rejection or disappointment can leave scars that affect how they see future relationships or even their marriage. As a result, they may become guarded, suspicious or fearful of being hurt again.
Instead of seeing someone for who they truly are, they see them through the lens of past experiences. They expect failure before the relationship has even had a chance to grow. They focus on weaknesses rather than strengths and become trapped in a cycle of frustration and disappointment.
The problem is not always what is happening around them, but the lens through which they are seeing it.
Jesus spoke about this very principle when He said: “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.” (Matthew 6:22-23)
The wonderful thing about God’s presence is that He brings light where there was once darkness. When this happens a person’s outlook begins to change.
Old hurts no longer control their thinking. Negative patterns begin to break. Their perspective changes. They start seeing people differently. They become more understanding, more patient and more hopeful. They learn to look beyond imperfections and recognise the value that God sees in others.
Most importantly, they begin to see themselves through God’s eyes instead of through the labels, failures and disappointments of the past.
If your love life has been marked by frustration or heartbreak, perhaps what you need most is not a change of circumstances but a change of vision.
Imagine being able to recognise healthy love, make wise decisions and see your future with confidence. That is what happens when God cleanses your eyes.
