At the start of every year, month, or even week, many people set goals for themselves. They want to improve their finances, advance in their career or start a new business. Yet despite their good intentions, many never achieve what they set out to do.
Why?
One of the biggest reasons is that they are not prepared for difficult days. When challenges arise, and they always do, many become discouraged, react emotionally, or make decisions that take them further away from their goals. The pressure becomes too much, and they lose focus on what they were building.
The reality is that every worthwhile goal will be tested. The question is not whether obstacles will come, but how we will respond when they do.
We can learn a powerful lesson from the biblical account of Moses’ family in the book of Exodus.
In Exodus 1:8-10, a new Pharaoh came to power in Egypt and became concerned about the growing number of Hebrews. Their growth made him feel threatened, and he began looking for ways to stop them from increasing further.
This highlights an important truth: growth often attracts opposition. When you begin to make progress in life, not everyone will celebrate it. Whether you are improving financially, pursuing a new opportunity, or working towards a personal goal, you may encounter resistance along the way. Sometimes this opposition comes from circumstances, and at other times from people who are uncomfortable with your progress.
However, the most important question is not who is against you, but whether God is with you. When a person remains aligned with God’s will, even opposition can be overcome.
Pharaoh’s fear eventually led him to issue a decree that every Hebrew baby boy was to be put to death. Faced with this impossible situation, a Hebrew woman named Jochebed made a courageous decision. She placed her newborn son in a basket on the River Nile, trusting God with his future.
Imagine how difficult that must have been. She had no guarantees how things would work out. Yet she acted anyway.
This teaches us a valuable lesson about achieving our goals. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is refusing to let fear stop you.
Many people remain stuck because they are waiting for the perfect moment, complete certainty, or a guarantee of success. But breakthroughs rarely happen that way. Often, progress begins when we take a step of faith.
At the same time, Jochebed’s daughter Miriam stayed nearby, watching carefully. When Pharaoh’s daughter discovered the baby and felt compassion for him, Miriam immediately recognised an opportunity.
She approached Pharaoh’s daughter and asked, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” (Exodus 2:7). Pharaoh’s daughter agreed, and Miriam brought Jochebed, allowing Moses’ own mother to care for him.
Miriam’s actions show the importance of being alert and ready to act. Opportunities can come unexpectedly and may only be available for a short time. Those who achieve their goals are often not the most talented or the most experienced. They are the ones who recognise opportunities and have the courage to act when they appear.
Many people do not reach their goals because they struggle in three key areas: preparation, courage, and timing. They are unprepared for challenges, afraid to take necessary steps, or hesitant when opportunities arise.
