Blessing of the 7 Gates of Jerusalem: Herod’s Gate (Gate of Fishes)

Fish Gate

Built during the Ottoman period, Herod’s Gate was a strategically important entry point to Jerusalem and served as a key element of the city’s northern defensive structure. It is situated near the location of another significant gate: the Gate of Fishes.

Fishing was a vital trade in ancient Israel, particularly around the Sea of Galilee. As a religious and cultural centre, Jerusalem had gates like the Gate of Fishes that facilitated trade and commerce, helping to sustain the city and its inhabitants. The Gate of Fishes is believed to have been located near a fish market, where fish could be brought into the city from the nearby seas and rivers.

This brings us back to the miraculous catch of fish performed by the Lord Jesus in Biblical times (Luke 5:4-7). This great miracle teaches us a valuable lesson about the true meaning of life, which you can learn more about this Sunday, 16 March. We will proceed with the Blessing of the 7 Gates of Jerusalem, this time focusing on Herod’s Gate (below).
