“After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that he will not return to Fox News Channel.”
The above announcement was made by the company 21st Century Fox, owner of the American television channel Fox News, on the 16th. States – being fired are sexual harassment against other employees of the company.
According to a report published in The New York Times (NYT), O’Reilly entered into an agreement with five women who sued him for the same reason, paying compensation that, together, reached 13 million dollars (equivalent to more than 40 million of reais). A sixth victim, however, did not accept the agreement and spoke about the case to the NYT. As a result, O’Reilly lost his job.
This is the second firing at Fox News for the same reason in less than a year. In July 2016, the same thing happened to one of the founders of the channel, journalist Roger Alias.

Sexual harassment consists of “embarrassing someone with the aim of obtaining sexual advantage or favors, the agent taking advantage of his/her status as a hierarchical superior or ancestry inherent to the exercise of employment, position or function”, according to Brazilian legislation.
That is: any attitude that embarrasses or threatens someone with the purpose of obtaining sexual favors is considered harassment. Singing around or speaking in an invasive and/or offensive manner is also a crime. It’s called “indecent harassment”.
These forms of aggression, like all others , must be eradicated. And the first step towards that is the reaction.
“The secret is to react, it’s not to hold everything thrown in your face; on the contrary, you have to stand up and fight in a constructive way”, says writer Cristiane Cardoso, author of the book “A Mulher V” .
For this reaction, follow these steps :
1- Make it clear to the aggressor that you are not satisfied with his attitude. Don’t be intimidated or embarrassed. On the contrary, remain aware that you are being attacked and will not allow this to happen.
2- If the situation is not resolved immediately, inform the manager or the company’s Human Resources department. It covers an attitude.
3- Look for the police. Both sexual harassment and indecent harassment are crimes and perpetrators must answer for their actions.
It may be that these attitudes cause discomfort within the company, but the woman cannot be intimidated. Rather, she must use her strength to preserve her honor and morals.
