The Fast of Daniel draws inspiration from the book of Daniel chapter 10, when Daniel fasted for 21 days to seek God’s wisdom and understanding.

In today’s world, many people struggle to have a closer relationship with God. But due to many distractions like social media, movies, TV shows, and various forms of entertainment, claiming they don’t have the time. The Fast of Daniel offers a unique opportunity to set aside those distractions and dedicate that time to invest in their personal communion with God.

Why participate in this purpose?

The ultimate purpose of the Fast of Daniel is to receive the Holy Spirit, which is God Himself living within us. But how can a Holy God dwell in imperfect human beings? While He doesn’t expect perfection, He desires a willing heart. Just as no one would pour clean water into a dirty cup, we must first empty ourselves of things like anger, greed, gossip, envy, pride, and grudges, and anything that separates us and God. Only then can we truly make room for Him to enter and dwell within us.

Now that you understand the purpose and meaning behind the Fast of Daniel, the next step is knowing how to take part. Ready to dive in?

Here’s how you can join the fast.

Starting the Daniel Fast isn’t just about staying away from social media, news and entertainment. It’s about intentionally setting aside time to seek God. Before you begin the 21 days of fasting, consider these 3 steps:

Step 1: Present Your Fast to God in Prayer

This is a crucial step — don’t skip it.
Spend time in prayer and:

  • Offer the next 21 days to God.
  • Ask Him what He wants you to do during these 21 days.

Remember, we must empty ourselves of anything that is separating us from Him.

Step 2: Be Specific with Your Intentions

Write down what you’re praying for during the fast:

  • The priority is the Holy Spirit.
  • If you already have the Holy Spirit, perhaps you’re seeking a deeper relationship with God.

Having a clear intention will help you stay focused when the fast becomes challenging.

Daniel’s prayer was answered because he persevered in seeking knowledge and understanding of God’s will. His faith was firmly grounded in the Word of God, which kept him from losing heart or allow doubt to enter his mind. Many Christians become discouraged in prayer and fasting, because their faith is based on emotion and dependent on what they can see. But those who believe as the Scriptures say, do not give up in times of difficulties.

In Daniel chapter 10, an angel revealed to Daniel that a great spiritual battle had taken place. Daniel’s prayer was heard on the first day, but there was resistance from evil forces, which was only overcome with the help of Michael the archangel. We also face similar spiritual warfare in our daily lives, and to overcome, we must persevere in prayer.

Step 3: Begin with Purpose

Once you have prayed and written down your focus, begin your fast. This might mean:

  • Setting a specific time each day to read your Bible
  • Dedicating time to prayer
  • Putting your phone on “Do Not Disturb” in the mornings to prioritise seeking God first

Instead of reaching for our phones first thing in the morning, what if we started the day differently? By removing distractions, we create space to focus on the things of God. As the Bible says: Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:2)

How about starting your day with a purpose, set the tone for everything that follows. During the Fast of Daniel, you can start your mornings by tuning in to Be Inspired at 7:30am, Monday to Friday. It’s a moment to align your thoughts with God’s Word. Download the Liberty Radio App from the App Store or Google Play to tune in.

When we meditate on His Word, we begin to exchange our thoughts for His.
The Bible is our guide for life — it teaches us how to live. When we read the Bible, we are allowing God to speak to us.
