Take the example of England coach Gareth Southgate. Although he was soaked in the euphoria of having taken England to the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in 12 years, he found his wife her in the stands and went to embrace her.
Gareth and Alison have been married for 20 years and have two children together, aged 19 and 15. While Alison shirks the spotlight that comes with being a celebrity wife, some believe England’s recent success has something to do with Gareth’s family-first attitude.
The coach has admitted in the past that the quality time he spends with his family is key to keeping him well while he’s not working.
Therefore, he encourages players to spend time with their families during breaks between tournaments.

It looks like this strategy of allowing players to spend time with their loved ones is paying off. It seems that the “curse” that followed the England team has been removed. England reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2006, winning a thrilling penalty shoot-out for the first time since 1996. In Gareth’s own words, “The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing” .
