Our Soup Kitchen started in our Catford branch after a pop-up soup kitchen was run for one day during the Christmas Week of 2016. The overwhelming success of that event meant we were compelled to make the initiative a regular occurrence, and in 2017 we officially opened the Soup Kitchen with the aim of helping the homeless in the local area as well as anyone else who was in need of a hot meal and food provisions.

Since then, we have welcomed people of all backgrounds within that local community onto our premises to enjoy a light meal of soup and bread on a weekly basis. As a bonus we are also able to offer groceries to take away to help those who come and their family. Items provided include pastas, rice, tins and other non-perishables, as well as tea, coffee, and snacks. In 2018 our Soup Kitchen collected nearly 8,000kg of food from Lidl, Aldi, Waitrose, Tesco and Greggs and also works with FareShare, who redistribute surplus food to charities.

The Catford Soup Kitchen has now grown to be an award-winning outreach project, winning the Lewisham Council ‘Mayor’s Award for Volunteering’ in 2019 and aims to continue providing its award-winning service to the local community.

Our willingness to assist the community through these difficult times, meant that when the first lockdown occurred in March, our plans to open our doors for more soup kitchens were fast-tracked. And to date, we have made several arrangements and modifications to our buildings to expand the project to five different locations. We now have a Soup Kitchen operating in Catford, Leeds, Kilburn, Peckham, and Finsbury Park, all running from 11am – 1pm every Saturday.

We are currently feeding some 550 people every Saturday through our Soup Kitchen, which equates to well over 2,000 people per month across our locations. As we did last year, we are planning to open on Christmas day; feeding the homeless as part of our Give Warmth appeal, and in the locations where we are currently unable to set up Soup Kitchens, we are endeavouring to serve the local community by means of the UCKG Food Banks

Watch out for more locations opening very soon as we continue our mission to serve our local communities with not only hot food and essential food provisions, but also warm smiles, cheerful volunteers and a super friendly and welcoming environment.

If you or someone you know could benefit from the help provided at the Soup Kitchen, visit one of the locations below every Saturday between 11am-1pm.
