René Robert: Killed by Indifference

Night of the Soul, spiritual life,

Killed by indifferences

Last week, 85-year-old renowned Swiss photographer René Robert went out for an evening stroll in a busy neighbourhood in Paris, where He lived. What he didn’t know was that it would be the last night of his life.

While strolling, he fell face-first on the pavement hitting his head. The saddest detail is that while he lay there, people were walking by but no one checked on him for nine hours. According to a close friend, Robert “suffered a dizzy spell and fell. Unable to get up, he lay rooted to the spot in the cold for nine hours until a homeless person called the emergency services. Too late. He had hypothermia and couldn’t cling on to life. Over those nine hours, no passer-by stopped to check why this man was lying on the pavement. Not one. He was killed by indifference.

This sad occurrence shows us two things. First, the Lord’s prophecy about the end of days is being fulfilled: “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)

Second, people often value trivial things over what’s really important. Probably, if someone had dropped a smartphone or some money on the pavement, people would have noticed it shortly, but no one noticed a man who needed help. Unfortunately, the same applies to our spiritual life. People are normally so busy thinking about what is ephemeral that they end up forgetting the most important thing in life, which is the salvation of our soul.

We don’t know when will be our last day on earth, and our soul is the only thing that we will carry with us into the afterlife. That’s why we invite you to join us this Wednesday for the Night of the Soul, at 7.30pm (3pm). Take some time to invest in your eternity so you can take possession of the most precious treasure that God has prepared for you: your salvation.
