What would make 270 people give up their sunny Sunday morning to take part in a 5K run? That’s exactly what took place on 13th June at Greenwich Park where sponsored runners were raising funds for the Hackney HelpCentre.
So what’s the big deal? What’s so special about this place? The UCKG HelpCentre is a Christian church and registered charity that helps anyone regardless of race, sex or religion. It offers many services to the community such as:
* Free daily one-to-one advice
* Patient Care Group (volunteers that visit those house bond and in hospital)
* Youth Group (currently helping 70+ young men/women, volunteers include some ex-gang members)
* Senior Citizens group
* Support for prison inmates and their families
The Hackney HelpCentre needs urgent repairs which will cost £150,000. Funds started being raised from April 2010 for this much loved grade II listed building which is of high historic interest. It is one of the few London synagogues showing the expansion of London's Jewish community from the late Victorian period.
We want to say a BIG thank you to all the runners and those who sponsored them. Together, they managed to raise just over £ 38 000. However, there is still a long way to go to reach the £150,000 target.
For this reason volunteers continue to soldier on and are now taking part in a House to House collection to raise the remaining funds.
Get involved with this great project by helping us with your donation today. You can either place your donation in the security tins provided by the volunteers or by donating securely online. By contributing, you will be ensuring the survival of this historic building for many years to come and that the community work of the UCKG HelpCentre there will go on helping thousands every year.
