Tycoon workshop opens doors
for young people

Released: 03.09.06

Following a government initiative to provide secondary school students with enterprise training, 40 young people, from Finsbury Park and nearby parts of North London, attended a Young Tycoons workshop at the Rainbow Theatre on September 1. Charles Ajorgbor, UCKG’s business advisor, told the wannabe entrepreneurs: “You are our future; but you have to be totally committed and go about your business in the right way if you want to be one of the next generation of UK wealth-creators.”

Organised by UCKG’s Victory Youth Group (VYG), the workshop was inspired by a recent TV programme about youngsters setting up in business earlier and earlier. The focus was to encourage young would-be entrepreneurs to explore the possibility of self-employment and the seminar showcased the support and funding available to them at the UCKG HelpCentre in Finsbury Park.

Business minded youths listened to advice, information and direction from a series of speakers who covered business startups, social enterprise (businesses with a community element) and opportunities in construction. They responded with a lively question and answer session. Further one-to-one briefings followed, for those who already had business ideas they wanted to discuss.

Charles provided numerous hints and tips for business success. “The idea of setting up a business may seem daunting at first; some of you might even be wondering if your idea will work,” he said. “But remember that the inventors of the telephone and the computer faced tremendous scepticism, then think through everything you need to consider before you start your business, and make sure you have the right attitude and take professional advice.”

The workshop was run in conjunction with the business advice unit that UCKG operates throughout the year at its Finsbury Park training centre. The programme was designed to help those who want to start their own business or have done so already and would like guidance on improving it.

“We have started a long term initiative to help young people achieve their goals,” said Pastor Luke Castro, head of VYG operations in the UK. “It is essential that young people realise their full potential, for their own benefit and for the sake of the wider community and the country.”

The Victory Youth Group was set up in 1996 by the UCKG HelpCentre and currently has a regular church-wide attendance of over 1000 youngsters every week. It offers a combination of fun activities, practical support, and spiritual guidance, which has already helped numerous young people to take control of their lives and improve their prospects.
