As well as sponsoring those who climbed the highest mountain in the UK, many other activities were organised such as sponsored bike rides, fayres, boot sales, etc. See top left for the amount raised so far. However, not wanting to enter the New Year without the Peckham matter resolved, Bishop Renato and colleagues took the bold step of approaching the landlord of the Peckham HelpCentre to purchase the building before the deadline of 14th January 2008. But how would this be possible? As many of the people that donated were tax payers, an additional £80,000 can be claimed back as gift aid from the Inland Revenue. The remainder of the money was topped up by the normal UCKG HelpCentre funds so on Friday 14th December, there was a meeting with the Peckham HelpCentre’s landlord. The relevant paperwork was signed and now the Peckham building belongs to the UCKG! This has been a remarkable achievement and the UCKG wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to all the people who raised money and also donated. However, the Ben Nevis Challenge is not over. The next hurdle is to refurbish the entire building which is in very bad condition. Some of the projects are to install a new training centre and a new youth centre that will cater for young people every single day by providing courses for life skills and academic excellence. There will also be leisure space. The aim is that by this time next year, the Peckham HelpCentre will be a completely different place. Therefore, if you still have pledges that you have not yet collected, please continue to do so. If you wish to help with the projects, please do make a donation. The Peckham fund account will remain open. This site will keep you updated on the progress of refurbishment works so please keep visiting. Once again, thanks for your support!
