“Thanks to the generosity of the volunteers we collected many units of the rarer blood types and found a successful bone marrow match for a patient awaiting treatment,” said Wayne Latcham, NBS team manager. “Each donation will help the NHS to tackle the current shortage and treat people for conditions ranging from leukaemia, acute blood loss and burns to other potentially threatening conditions.” A recent NBS survey suggested that only three per cent of blood donors in the UK are from the Asian, African and African-Caribbean communities. This is a matter of serious concern for the NHS because a number of blood types are more common among these groups and some are unique to people from certain ethnic backgrounds. Due to this shortage, the UCKG called on members and non-members alike to come forward and help. UCKG is a Christian church and registered charity that offers a range of practical support activities alongside spiritual support and comfort. The HelpCentre will also be offering free blood pressure testing all next week at its Lozells Road premises, as part of National Blood Pressure Testing Week. “By getting yourself checked regularly, high blood pressure can be identified and addressed. This is widely recognised as important in reducing the risk of stroke, heart attacks and other conditions,” explains Pastor EdMilson from UCKG in Birmingham. “Advice on diet and lifestyle to help avoid high blood pressure will also be provided by representatives of the Blood Pressure Association.” Free testing will be available on Wednesday 14 and Friday 16 September between 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, and on Sunday 18 September 1pm to 6pm. For more information please contact 0121 554 3334. -Ends- If you require any further information regarding the UCKG, please submit your enquiry or telephone Francessca Lewis on 0207 686 6033.
