Statement from UCKG in respect of the future of the EMD Cinema, Hoe Street, Walthamstow

Released: 29.09.05

UCKG (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God) has instructed Humberts Leisure to market the EMD Cinema in order to arrive at a solution for the future of the Grade II* listed building that is acceptable to the local community. However it remains the church's objective to open a HelpCentre in Walthamstow, providing both spiritual and practical support for the local community in line with its Christian principles.

Having been prevented from starting on the restoration of the disused EMD Cinema for a variety of planning-related reasons, the church has spent 18 months exploring the options for the future of the building. Even though there are still a few plans on the table, the church’s board has taken this step as it wishes to open up all options.

We hope that the interest generated by Humberts will resolve matters in respect of the Hoe Street cinema building and thereby enable us to move forward in bringing the benefits of a forward thinking Christian centre to the borough” said Pastor Paul Hill, head of property for UCKG.

Humberts are not quoting any formal guide price, but seeking expressions of serious interest on either a freehold or leasehold basis by November 18. It should be noted that significant capital investment will be required to refurbish and fit out the building, despite the fact that UCKG has spent in excess of £80,000 over the last three years on essential maintenance to prevent further deterioration.

Note to editors: The church recognises that the Grade II* listed property is on English Heritage’s at risk register. Reasons for inclusion on the Register include situations whereby buildings are ‘functionally redundant, making their future uncertain’ as well as condition. It does not imply criticism of the owners of the buildings and monuments concerned, many of whom are actively seeking ways to secure their future.

Although English Heritage classes the condition as ‘poor’, this is a long way short of its worst classification, and reflects the fact that unused buildings naturally fall into decline and decay.
