He told training centre manager Kim Powell that: "People need to know what is going on in the church” where vocational training and related services are provided for local residents. The aim of the Open Day was is to showcase the training courses, business support, and advice and careers guidance services that UCKG provides for the local community using a series of stands and demonstrations. The then Mayor, Cllr Jonathan Dearth was keen to know how many students are taught and to learn that most of them are members of the general public rather than church members. “He was also interested in the UCKG's seniors and youth groups and wanted to know how these groups support their members through both practical and prayful means,” Kim Powell added. In introducing the main presentation he complemented the church on the good work it is doing for the community. Kim Powell announced a series of new courses that is to be introduced in the coming months. They include carpentry and plumbing; debt advice and short taster courses on word processing, spreadsheets, graphs and charts, databases, the Internet and PowerPoint. Students at the centre are mainly people at the greatest risk of exclusion from the labour market such as the long-term unemployed, women returners, lone parents, and unachieved school leavers.
