Manchester’s first UCKG ?
HelpCentre opens

Released: 09.08.07

UCKG has returned a Grade I listed building to its former glory as a church to open its first Manchester HelpCentre on Daisy Bank Road, Victoria Park on Saturday August 11.

Due to popular demand of the part-time special works services held at the Premier Travel Inn in Bishopsgate, the new 300 seat HelpCentre will be opening its doors to the public at 12pm. The historic building was designed by Edgar Wood, a notable Manchester architect, in 1903 and UCKG is proud to have converted it from offices back to its original state as a church.

Pastor Paul Hill, head of property for UCKG said: “The conversion of church buildings into offices, restaurants, warehouses and pubs has become more and more common in the UK. UCKG is strongly engaged in changing this scenario and hopes the conversion of this building will be the first of many.”

A UCKG HelpCentre is a combination of a thriving community centre and a church for public worship offering services four times a day, seven days a week. Special services of prayer will take place at the Daisy Bank Road HelpCentre at 7.30am, 10.00am, 3.00pm and 7.30pm daily, with a focus on life coaching and practical advice.

Bishop Renato Cardoso, who heads UCKG in Britain, will lead the open day’s services assisted by Pastor Cesar de Souza, who is to be in charge at Manchester, and his assistant Pastor Francisco Lima.

We look forward to welcoming members of the local community, church members and regular attendees to informal worship that aims to connect people with God without undue ceremony getting in the way,” said Bishop Renato.

In Manchester, the HelpCentre will offer youth and seniors groups, a training centre, and one-to-one advice for people who need individual help. The training centre will offer courses that lead to recognised qualifications; and its youth ministry, Victory Youth Group (VYG), will provide young people with a familiar place they can turn to for practical, moral and ethical advice and guidance with a range of activities. A crèche, Kidszone, will be available for children of parents attending church and participating in other UCKG activities.

Notes to editors:

Edgar Wood (1860-1935) practised from Manchester around the turn of the century and gained a considerable reputation both in Britain and abroad, notably in Germany. British design was then of European significance. He was active in Manchester for over twenty years and contributed to the city in various ways. He was a founder of the Northern Art Workers' Guild in 1896, one of the major provincial societies within the Arts and Crafts Movement; he was president of the Manchester Society of Architects from 1911-12; and he was instrumental in saving the colonnade of Manchester's first town hall, designed by Francis Goodwin, which stood in King Street and was demolished c. 1911.
