UCKG Training Centre launches Construction Industry Training Initiative

Released: 28.06.06

Finding plumbers, electricians, or other skilled tradesmen is notoriously difficult in London, both for householders needing work on their homes and for contactors seeking staff. The UCKG Training Centre in Seven Sisters Road Finsbury Park will help to improve matters for both employers and would-be employees by launching a range of courses in construction skills with effect from July 24.

The 20-week courses will enable students to gain CSCS (Construction Kills Certification Scheme) certification in areas such as plumbing, painting and decorating, electronics, joinery and masonry. The training is free and open to everybody in London including women seeking careers in construction and refugees who need to convert their existing qualifications into UK-recognised qualifications.

CSCS cards are linked to NVQs at all levels, and confirm that the holders have trade skills and a good knowledge of health and safety. As a result the card-holders' ability to get work on well managed sites is much improved.

We have joined up with Construction Web to provide a series of high-quality training programmes linked to guaranteed employment opportunities in the construction industry as part of our outreach programme. Our priority is to help people who are disadvantaged in the jobs market get into work,” said the UCKG Training Centre manager Kim Powell.

Construction Web brings together local authorities in North London, training providers and funders, the Construction Industry Training Board and development agencies. It is an ideal partner for us as its aims, of helping individuals who are interested in finding employment and/or undertaking training in construction trades, and potential employers seeking skilled labour or sub-contractors, are similar to our own,” she added.

The UCKG Training Centres at Finsbury Park, Croydon, Luton and Kilburn are part of the social and Christian outreach programme of the UCKG (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God) HelpCentre. The centres have a high success rate with some 80 per cent of students completing their courses and gaining qualifications. The drop-outs include students who gain employment before their courses are complete or move out of area.

How to enroll

For more information on the courses and to enroll, contact Samantha Dixon on 020 7686 6013 by July 15.

Courses at UCKG Training Centres are open to individuals aged 16+, irrespective of their religious beliefs or backgrounds. The centres are extremely approachable and can help adults who have been out of education for a significant period of time to rebuild their confidence and prepare them for the world of work.
