UCKG opens in the land of the clever
Released: 08.02.08

It’s regarded as the birthplace of the first major democracy, the Olympic Games, Western Literature, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles and Western drama including both tragedy and comedy. We’re talking about Greece, situated in South eastern Europe in the juncture of Europe, Asia and Africa.

This all sounds very impressive and the Greeks can certainly say they have a lot to be proud of. However, as a Bishop of the UCKG discovered, most of them have many personal problems, especially in their health and family.

Bishop Mendes who was previously heading the church in Israel was given the responsibility to open the first UCKG in Greece. At the end of last year, he was organising house meetings and last month, the official opening of the UCKG took place.

"The Greeks are very faithful to their traditions”, said Bishop Mendes. We have limits but thank God, we are not forbidden to express our faith. It’s not like some countries where you are totally free to do whatever you wish but we are able to express our faith in the Lord Jesus".

Ninety-eight per cent of the citizens are Greek Orthodox and the rest are made up of Muslim, Jewish, Catholic and other religious communities. However, although the Greeks are very traditional, they have been very open to the Word of God.

“They have accepted the work of the UCKG very well," continued Bishop Mendes. "At our opening, there were around 50 people and since then, people have been attending the services which we are currently holding 3 times a week. We are seeing great things happening such as people being healed and the Work of God is certainly growing here."

If you have friends or relatives in Greece, let them know where the church is. The address is: El. Venizelou 337, Kallitea, Athens, Greece.
