VYG says ‘NO’ to knife and gang violence

Knife attacks are becoming more vicious and the victims and perpetrators younger than ever-but you already knew that. The government is introducing new legislation to try and curb the knife and gun crime trend ... but hasn’t this been done before? Can it really make a difference?

Lack of family intimacy, insecurities, peer pressure, and music are but a few of the reasons believed to be the cause of this destructive trend. But while Gordon Brown’s 'crackdown on knife crime’ ideas has left most people-young and old-divided, how effective will this measure really be?

The VYG’s Where U Going? event has shown that there is a way to get young people to get out of a destructive lifestyle. Last week the Where U Going event, which took place simultaneously in the different VYG branches, brought to life the common events that affect young people today. Area code, ‘beef’, knives, need for protection, and peer pressure were issues raised in the drama performance.

While many young people related to the play, admitting that most of what was on display was the norm, it was the real life story of ex-gang member Chris Somi and the message that caused them to stop and think about where they were heading in life.

“Just as Chris had to stop and look at his life and think about his actions and decide to change, it’s not until you make the decision to change and stop following other people’s minds that the same will happen to you,” said Pastor Luke (Victory Youth Group UK leader), who held the meeting at the Rainbow.

The Where U Going event concludes this Sunday at 1.30pm with a live musical, performance and much more.

Visit the Where U Going website for more information.
