The death penalty - can it be justified?

With the recent jailing of two convicted serial killers; the Sun newspaper conducted a survey in order to try and capture the readers’ views on whether the death penalty should be brought back or not.

According to the newspaper, over 100,000 readers who voted in the poll were in favour of the return of the death penalty. Last week, bouncer Levi Bellfield was found guilty of murdering two women, Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange.

Steve Wright, nicknamed the Suffolk Strangler, was also found guilty of strangling five prostitutes. Both were told they would spend the rest of their lives in prison with no chance of ever being freed.

The views of six of Britain’s religious leaders were also brought forward; with five of the six being against the death penalty, with varying reasons for their opinion. However, members of the victims’ families public question whether life imprisonment is justice enough, and call for the death penalty to be reinstated.

What is your view on the death penalty? Do you agree that it should be brought back for certain cases; or do you believe that it should not be reinstated?

Share your views on the forum today.
