The hand of God

“Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that
his soul should enjoy good in his labour. This also, I saw, was
from the hand of God.”
(Ecclesiastes 2.24)

Let’s take a closer look at the Book of Ecclesiastes where we can learn three special things…

Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labour. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.(Ecc 2.24)

This verse shows us that although God is Spirit, He knows that for us to survive in a physical world we need physical things - we need to eat, to drink, clothes to wear etc. - and He wants us to enjoy these things. God wants to provide for us in every way. However, there is a condition for this: we must acknowledge that everything good comes from the hand of God.

How’s your salary, your house, your food - your life? All good things come from the hand of God and, according to the Bible, if you are not enjoying life then it’s because what you have didn’t come from the hand of God. This verse tells us that whatever we do must be blessed so that we can enjoy it. How many opportunities have been lost because of our tendency to rely on ourselves and not on God?

An important thing to note is that this enjoyment is not temporary; it’s permanent. You are healthy, prosperous, confident and strong today and will still be healthy, prosperous, confident and strong tomorrow. But again, you must submit to God, obey Him and depend on what comes from His hand.

For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?(Ecc 2.25)

In it’s original Hebrew context, ‘more than I’ means ‘without Me’ (without God). Can life really be enjoyed without God?

Now you understand why certain decisions you made went wrong and why you are suffering the consequences of wrong actions you took. You can be the most religious or wisest person, but without Him you’ll never be able to enjoy life.

For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.(Ecc 2.46)

The UCKG is so persecuted because we are always appealing for you to use your wisdom and intelligence, and not your emotions. God gives wisdom and knowledge because wise people don’t need to depend on anyone; but He only gives it to those who are good in His sight.

It’s painful to invest years of your life into something but not be able to enjoy the benefits of it. That’s what happens if you don’t’ do what is good in God’s sight.

So do you want to succeed and prosper? Then do what is good in His sight. Ask yourself what you are doing that doesn’t please God. Start with your actions and attitude at home with your spouse or children, followed by the way you are at work.
