From MacDonalds worker
to business man

I was studying for an MBA in Business Administration and Computer Science although I already had a background in computer sciences. When people decide to settle in a new country, they often face a lot of problems, but things were going really well for me. I was offered a job as a lecturer in computer sciences and I was very happy and motivated.

After one year I travelled back to Pakistan to visit my family. A month later, I returned to find that I had lost my job because a lot of my colleagues were feeding negative things about me to the dean. I was also living with my uncle who often put me down with negative words to the point I lost my confidence and hit an all time low. I decided to make a career working in McDonalds because I thought that I wasn’t good enough to work in computer science anymore. I was very depressed and had no confidence.

I worked for about six months then the university called offering to take me back. I decided to quit the McDonalds job and put my all into what I enjoyed doing, but once again I was fired due to negative comments made by the same colleagues who were jealous of what I was achieving. I ended up back at McDonalds and was trapped in a 3-year cycle of getting a good job and getting fired. But my bad luck didn’t end there; I started to drown my sorrows and before long, I was racking up debts just to finance my taste for alcohol.

One day I went to an Internet cafe and I found a UCKG invitation card. It listed several problems that related to me, but I put the card in my wallet and forgot about it. Two months later I came across that same card when I was feeling really low. I called the UCKG’s helpline and was advised to attend the services. I started attending the Monday meetings for finances and found them really valuable. I was hearing things like, ‘You have to have faith in whatever you do, no matter what obstacles come your way,’ and ‘Persevere towards what you want, don’t tell yourself that you can’t do it.’

Over a short period of time my faith in God and in myself began to grow. My passion for computer science was reignited and I decided to start a new business in the IT industry. I started out as a website developer, putting ads in libraries and on free advertising websites. But this time I did it believing in myself and believing that things would work out for me.

My business is going really well and I have a lot of contracts. I’m now financially stable, and am paying off my debts. Before, money was like water in my hands but now I have control over it. I’ve stopped drinking as well. At the UCKG I learned to have faith in God and also in myself.
