...My last hope “I dialled the number and started crying down the phone saying that I was going to kill myself.” Margaret happened to be an assistant of the UCKG and remembered inviting Sophia to the church a long time before. She spoke to Sophia firmly, telling her to go straight to the UCKG in Peckham. Sophia listened to Margaret and headed for the church. Before she got there, her phone rang and it was a pastor from the UCKG telling her that he wanted to pray for her over the phone. The pastor made a strong prayer which left Sophia feeling much calmer. She was so impressed that she continued on to the HelpCentre with a bit more hope, believing the words of the pastor when he had said that things could get better. Chain of Prayer She was advised to make a Chain of Prayer on Fridays for deliverance from suicidal thoughts as well as a complete breakthrough in her life. At first she found it hard to stick to the Chain of Prayer and kept falling back into depression. Her ex-boyfriend also showed up with food and clothes for her. Once again she became very dependant on him and forgot to depend on God as she had heard. “I found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me again and so decided to let go of him once and for all. I decided to get baptised because I wanted to start afresh.” The time came for Sophia to give birth. During the delivery the doctors feared that neither of them would make it as Sophia had high blood pressure and the baby was in distress. “I promised God that if He gave me another chance; if He saved my life, then I would live for Him.” Lives in danger The baby was premature because of Sophia’s smoking and because she had started punching herself in the stomach when she was depressed, and so the birth was a caesarean. The pastor continued to pray for her son’s recovery but Sophia knew that she had to change as well. She was faithful in her Chains of Prayer and was determined to please God with her life, and so she began to grow steadily in her faith. “After receiving prayers at the UCKG I felt that there was hope. The pastors and Now three years on, Sophia is a changed person. She has been delivered from the suicidal thoughts and depression. She has her own flat and is full of love for her 3-year-old son. “I’ll never let my child go through anything like what I did. I love him dearly and am determined to be a wonderful mother for him.“ Another great change in Sophia was her ability to forgive her dad. After three years of no contact with him, she knocked on his door to tell him that she had forgiven him. “He broke down in tears and apologised to me. I was making a Chain of Prayer for my dad and now he has also changed. We’ve put the past behind us and he’s a wonderful grandfather. Now after ten years, my parents are also on good terms with each other. I’m really happy, I feel renewed every morning.”
